Yes, you say Parc Guell and not Park Guell because it is written in catalan, the local language of the city. We discovered a very big sign at the main entrance that makes it very clear.

We were 17 people + 2 instructors, meeting last Saturday at the park to admire and photograph Gaudi´s work in terms of architecture. The day was splendid, because even tough we are in the middle of the winter Barcelona has ha shinny blue sky that gave us bright light, deep shadows and great colors for our pictures. our group was eager to learn more abut aperture and speed so we started exploring the secrets of contrast and aperture on everyone´s cameras. every camera a new discovery and also a wonderful opportunity.

One great thing: the work of Gaudi offer a lot of texture and opportunities to expand photographic techniques and capture, texture, depth and color in a vibrant way. Gaudi´s philosophy about creating a point where architecture and nature interact in an harmonious way is the legacy we have recently discovered in sustainable architecture.

But also, speed was a photographic interest for this group, freezing and registering movement here was not an easy task, because such a splendid day made visitors lay down or recline o enjoy the magnificent view. We could not stop laughing about freezing relaxed people, so we relaxed ourselves and joined them.

Ranan came from New York to spend a couple of months in Barcelona.

He was certainly interested in developing his photography skills and took the Raval Photocircuit. As his main interests were architecture and moving objects: the perfect target were Raval Skaters, they usually skate around Macba and other squares downtown, specially during the summer. The afternoon light provided two main scenarios one completely illuminated with the sunshine and the other back light images. In addition a high speed was needed to freeze jumping and figures they constantly made.

In the background there was alway architecture both modern and classical, sometimes mixed, it was a nice idea to set them in an eclectic environment instead of the traditional graffiti-like backgrounds everyone uses.

After skaters, Ranan focused on architecture and discovered that it was very cool to meter reflections and create contrast between the light inside the reflection and the actual ¨real¨light in the building.

We ended our tour in Drassanes the Old Boat factory.

Last Sunday we went out with friends for brunch and spare time and found a couple nice places. One is the very photogenic Juicy Jones, a vegetarian restaurant in Calle Hospital where sandwiches and natural fruit & veggie juices make a great breakfast. the place is handpainted with colorful flowers and graffiti all over so you feel somewhere between a higway and a the beatles yellow submarine movie.

Then we walked across the city to the Old Roman Temple hidden in an apartment building backyard, near plaça st jaume, this a very quiet and singular spot where modern and classic definitively meet. For late lunch Pizza del Borne was a budget and tasty option, not Italian but Argentinian a wide variety of combinations will make you take 2 or 3 slices…

heading back home amazing graffitis all over the place where begging for a picture which they had.

happy Sunday!!

Last week 12 groups of 24 participants from Open Text Canada one of the biggest software companies in America, played the treasure hunt in Downtown Barcelona.

More than 1.000 pictures were produced and 5 hours of video recorded. Each group had a tour guide, a list of hints and a path to follow discovering places like the churreria in Petritxol Street, the Roman temple, St Jaume´s Square, Cartoonists & live statues from Las Ramblas, and a lot more.

Capturing images became the funniest part of it in a team building activity that integrated sales teams from UK, Germany, Canada, Italy, Spain, France and the USA.

We met at the Jaume I metro station, near Plaça St Jaume to walk across the Gothic Quarter. First they asked me to explain about basic functions like Aperture, Speed, ISO, Depth of Field, and White Balance so while we walked we took pictures of a very sunny Barcelona understanding concepts at the Felipe Neri Square

Half an hour later all technical issues were solved, we had some nice pictures and the hunt for city images started. They wanted to capture the Jaume I square, Santa Maria del Mar, The Cathedral and Paseo del Borne.

5 years ago I moved to Barcelona willing for a change and also trying to find ways to expand my experience with photography to other people.

A couple of years ago during a photography seminar I noticed how meaningful travel photography can be for tourists, that wish to keep memories but could also have a tool for understanding other cultures and places during an ordinary holiday.

So I created Photocircuits. A 2 or 3 hour walk where I can show people different aspects of this city, its people, its traditions, its diversity while teaching them how to use their camera and of course making fun pictures of hidden corners.

During these 2 years I have understood that people on holidays, more than looking for beach & sun, look for meaning in their lives when they escape their established roles and routines, maybe an opportunity to change their lives or see the world in a different way.

Today I am happy I have created a tool that allows me to talk, share and teach people photography in an informal way, but also an open opportunity for them to explore a new vision of the world and their live trough the camera.

If you ever come to Barcelona, give me a call or send me an email so we can walk around for 2 hours talking and making pictures.

Starting July 2009 Photocircuits & Phototours will be collaborating with Guide Out Barcelona, that orange pocket guide everyone uses when visiting the city.

Robert and Cristina, The Guide Out mentors, found that it would very interesting to publish those scenes that visitors to Barcelona capture when they walk around the city taking pictures with us. The best pictures will be published each month together with a credit and an opinion of its author about Barcelona and their experience here.

Since Barcelona is very diverse city, full of amazing places and experiences and so many different people from different cultures and countries constantly visit it, this can be a very interesting place to read all types of opinions, tips and points of view about how Barcelona really is.

Guide Out is the essential tool for Barcelona visitors and it is available at any tourist office in town, it has all the information about the city, shopping, landmarks, museums, cinema, performing arts, restaurants, bars and interesting events in town.

in Photocircuits & Phototours two different types of routes are offered: Basic Walks are for first timers in Barcelona and Pro Walks are for those who already know the city and wish to explore it in a deeper way. History, Architecture, Art, Foreign Cultures, Fashion, Design, Nature and The Beach are just some of the aspects anyone can choose to explore here. All of them providing excitement and the opportunity to learn more about your camera and the way you see the world.

We are happy to encourage visitors to explore in a respectful way every corner of the city and enjoy it bringing wonderful images back home.

Downtown Barcelona is a place you could visit as many times as you like and will always be full of surprises.

Architecture is the first thing you will be amazed about, hundreds of amazing buildings from different times and styles will catch your eye one after another. from Passeig de Gracia to Via Laietana, to the Roman Walls, to El Raval, you may get a neckache looking up. Quite enjoyable, downtown architecture reveals part of the history, the lifestyle and the stories behind the windows.

Downtown Barcelona By Photocircuits

Then comes people.

Barcelona has become a multicultural city where you can find locals from anywhere. Sometimes it becomes difficult to know who lives there and who is visiting. All races, all nationalities and most of all mixes This magic city has attracted Latinamericans, Germans, Chinese, Brits, french, Arabs, Italians, Americans, and people from Africa and the rest of the Mediterranean. You can find surprising couples and groups of friends, amazing hairstyles, tatoos, clothing and music in the local cafés.

And after that then come the shops, the restaurants and the landmarks….I live downtown barcelona since 2007 walk it everyday and honestly feel I still got a lot to discover here.

Treasure Hunt by Photocircuits Barcelona
Photo Treasure Hunt Across downtown Barcelona was an exciting adventure where 15 teenagers from Langley Fine Arts School in Surrey ( Vancouver).

Featuring some of the most interesting and not so well known spots in downtown Barcelona they had to identify, find and make a cool pic of unexpected locations as Arkham Comics, Tivoli Theater, Canaletas Fountain Els Tres Gats, and other cool spots in less than 2 hours, Competing against eachother the teams could ask qiestions, achieve points and win depending on how smart they were and how cool the pictures came out.

Lots of fun with these guys & girls…..
